This modified broad-spectrum Sony P8 camera comes with a 1000nm filter that passes only light beyond the visible, in the near-infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum. This makes possible:

Now, with digital, you get instant feedback: Never before has the photographer been able to see what their infrared photo will look like before they take it! It's quite amazing to look at the world through "different eyes". Near-Infrared photographs (film or digital) have been described as ethereal, surreal, evocative, dramatic. They can have great clarity and bold tonal contrasts. The photo at top was taken with this camera.

This Sony CyberShot P8 has been modified for full infrared functionality. This has been accomplished by replacing the internal infrared/UV blocking filter with a clear optical window that passes IR and UV wavelengths. This renders a camera that is sensitive to visible, infrared, and ultraviolet frequencies of light. Included is the external 1000nm infrared-pass filter you will need to take photos in the near-infrared. You can also use the camera for normal photography by using a color correction filter (not included). A 30mm lens ring has been glued to the front of the lens for mounting the filters.

This camera is capable of evocative and unusual scenic photography as you can see form the example above.

The Sony CyberShot P8 CCD and the associated electronics make it well suited for infrared photography. Because the CCD sensors in digital cameras and camcorders are sensitive to both visible and infrared light, most digital cameras have an internal "hot mirror" filter that cuts out infrared and ultraviolet light. Sony added even more infrared filtering to their highly IR-sensitive cameras and camcorders because of the PR flap over the so-called "X-Ray" effect. That crippling has been bypassed with this modification to this camera! The full power if this camera has been revealed. The entire spectrum of the original CCD from UV (ultraviolet) to IR (infrared) is now available to the adventurous photographer.

Included is a hard-to-find 1000nm infrared filter in 30mm diameter. This filter makes for darker skies and brighter foliage and more dramatic effects than most infrared-pass filters such as the Hoya RM-72 (720nm) because it is farther into the infrared. Longer wavelength infrared rays are more penetrating.

The so-called infrared “X-ray” effect is due to the fact that longer wavelengths of infrared are able to pass through and reveal what is behind certain materials. By using a special filter that passes IR light and blocks visible wavelengths, one is able to obtain various amounts of transparency in certain materials. This ability is used in police work (forensics), museum work, science (e.g., meteorology), and for interesting artistic effects. I've noticed that photos taken on a hazy day will reveal mountains standing out in clarity in the distance that were visible only as murky outlines in the haze in visible light.

The Sony DSC-P8 is a wonderfully compact digital camera. It is one of the smaller CyberShot models. Here you can see it with the (included) 1000nm infrared filter attached:

Externally, this camera is identical to a unmodified P8 except for the added lens ring. Internally, I’ve modified to optics so the camera can see the full range from the ultraviolet to the infrared (330nm to 1200nm).

Condition:
This camera is in very good condition. The quality of pictures is perfect. The LCD viewer is perfect. The only cosmetic flaws are some light, hard-to-notice scratches on the case.
