Yael: Adventures
in Oil
A little ancecdote to get started:
Yael, 10 years old, finds a hole in her neighbor’s backyard. She
hears her mom say “don’t do it” in one ear, but she
finds the potential adventure irresistable. Down the hole is a pipe
with water in it. She cant’s turn back now. She follows the pipe
1/2 a mile, until she can go no further. The only thing stopping her
is the fact that there are 3 other pipes, containing water and they
meet at a crossroads, emptying water into the center. Yael has found
a storm drain.
What does this have to do with Yael and art? Yael paints like that little
girl finding the storm drain. She pushes the limits with an unending
curiosity, seeking never ending challenges. Yael sketched throughout
her life: A Lexington Minuteman holding a saxaphone; a design consisting
of 4 horseheads; a tiger drawn with colored pencils, to name a few.
But it wasn’t until a paintbrush was placed in Yael’s hand
that magic happened. A calling, a thrill, dare we say destiny? Her favorite
subject is people: Capturing an emotion, a sunlit strand of hair, fabric
floating in the breeze. However, Yael doesn’t limit herself to
people. Many subjects interest her.
Yael has always been a fan of the masters, especially impressionistic
ones, and now is continuously studying to further her art. She feels
her journey will never end.
Yael has had the great fortune of having travelled the world. Russia,
Israel, Africa , the south of Mexico. She lived in England for a year,
and Eurailed for a month throughout Europe, especilly France because
she speaks the language. There, of course, she feasted her eyes upon
a variey of art. She plans on going back to Europe in a year, and surely
will view the art through an artists eyes.
Favorite artists? Van Gogh, of course, for his color and intensity.
Chagall, for his romance and intelligent whimsy. Wayne Thiebeaud for
his exploratory nature with color. Joaquin Sorolla for his beautiful
and innovative use of light.
My goals? To study and build on the masters and do the best I can to
produce quality work. Also, to be 80 years old, painting, and pushing
the limits…
